Hello and welcome to the website of Dr. Nora Ellen Carleson.

I am Curator of Fashion & Decorative Arts at Historic New England. In 2023, I graduated with my Ph.D. History of American Civilization Program at the University of Delaware. I am a historian and museum professional with experience in curation, collections management, research, intern supervision, oral history, social media marketing, public relations, and visitor's services. Though I'm a pop-culture devotee, I specialize in dress, design, and decorative arts history from 1865-present, with a passion for the Progressive Era political, cultural, and intellectual history.

My most recent project was my dissertation, "From Paul Revere to Plains Indians: The Politics of Fashion in Progressive Era America: 1893-1920." When not at researching and writing about people and their things you'll find me working on podcasts like "This Is Probably A Really Weird Question..." and "Thing4Things," cooking, reading fantasy fiction, watching all things horror and Disney (not always together), hunting down ephemera at antique stores, or most likely spending time with my dog and husband.

I earned my B.A. in History, graduating Suma Cum Laude from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois in 2011 with minors in Classics and Fine Arts and as part of the Honors Program. In 2013, I received my M.A. in History of Decorative Arts and Design from the Smithsonian Institution in partnership with George Mason University upon completing my thesis titled: "Harry Collins and the American Art of Dress: 1884-1980."  In 2019 I earned a MA in History from the University of Delaware and in 2020 I completed the Graduate Museum Studies Certificate Program.
